Android Apps India NewsTablets in India: yet to take off - Express Computer Depending on who you choose to believe, Apple will ship anywhere between 37 to 65 million iPads this year. However, in India, Android tablets which have taken a beating worldwide from Apple's heavyweight, are ruling the roost. Having said that, tablet sales as a whole have been anemic in India to date. For that to change, Android has to mature as a tablet OS. Currently, there are hardly any apps for Honeycomb. Once the next version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, is releasedthat should start to change. At the same time, tablets will have to be made more attractive in terms of utility. Pricing is important but simply pricing cut rate hardware inexpensively won't move tablets. What's required is a combination of quality applications, good hardware and 3G connectivity at a tolerable price (not more than Rs 500 per month for a decent data cap of 5 GB and above). At this point, laptops are outselling tablets 10:1 in India as per the official numbers. Of course, this probably doesn't take into account iPads bought abroad but that by itself will not significantly alter the numbers in any case. On the phone front, smartphones are still selling in relatively small numbers in India although that at least should change in 2012 with a combination of attractively priced smartphones and a reduction in 3G tariffs driving the wave. In a way, the low uptake of 3G to date is discouraging for makers of smartphones and tablets as these devices rely heavily on an active Internet connection to function. With only 10 million folks going for 3G to date, it's time for telcos to step up to the plate and improve the quality of service while at the same time rationalizing tariffs. 3G is, at the end of the day, just about two-three times as fast as EDGE. Charging seven to eight times GPRS/EDGEs going tariff for 3G is just plain silly. Combine that with poor connectivity, even in the metros, and you have a recipe for disaster. It's not surprising that the 3G numbers are anemic. However, this will change; it has to as even the telcos admit privately. By this time next year, we should see a combination of better service quality and lower tariffs. By that time, the Android tablet ecosystem should have matured and there should be plenty of devices in the Rs 10,000-15,000 price bracket that offer a decent user experience, at which point the tablet revolution will come to India. Google updates Google Translate apps for Android - CIOL Google had announced the translaton app for Android earlier this year with two languages. With the recent update, Google said, it can support 14 additional languages. The supported languages are Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Russian and Turkish. In January, Google had announced an experimental feature called Conversation Mode for Google Translate for Android, which enable user to translate sentences into different languages. Google Android market is top store for developers "Mobile technology and the web have made it easier for people around the world to access information and communicate with each other. But there's still a daunting obstacle: the language barrier. We're trying to knock down that barrier so everyone can communicate and connect more easily," said Jeff Chin, product manager at Google in a blog post . Does India's budget tablet computer work? - BBC News In this tablet-crazy age, you'd think a $60 hand-held Android tablet might trigger midnight queues and riots. Or at least get tech columnists really excited. When first announced, the Aakash prototype turned out to be not much more than an oversized memory box. Its ancestor, the functional hand-held Simputer, had flopped over and died. This tablet started its life as Sakshat, with a $35 subsidised price tag for students. In its shipping form, it's called Aakash, and it will cost 2,999 rupees ($62). I liked the almost-pocketable size and weight, which reminded me of Samsung's 7" Galaxy Tab, a very capable and underrated Android tablet that died before its prime.
