Apple set a date of Sept. 1 for its annual fall press conference - an event typically devoted to music and media products. This time around, the company may announce plans to let iTunes users rent TV shows for 99 cents, people familiar with the matter said last week. Viewers would be able to rent programs from Fox and other networks for 48 hours, the sources said. The company also will unveil a new Touch with a higher-resolution screen - similar to the one on the iPhone 4 - and a $99 version of its Apple TV set-top box, the sources said.

Chevron to offload gulf pipeline investment Chevron, the San Ramon oil giant, wants to sell its stake in a pipeline company that links U.S. Gulf Coast refiners with East Coast markets. The company says it has received "significant" interest in its 23 percent share of Colonial Pipeline Co., which operates the largest pipeline linking the two regions. Chevron, like other oil companies, is focused on production rather than distribution right now, says Brian Youngberg, an analyst at Edward Jones. Colonial Pipeline's 5,519-mile system moves gasoline and other fuels from refineries along the gulf to places like Washington and New York. The sale wouldn't disrupt supply, Chevron says.By The Associated Press(AP)– 46 minutes ago Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc. are both trying to buy data-storage provider 3Par Inc. — whose board has determined that HP's $2 billion, $30-per-share takeover bid is superior to Dell's offer.
3Par also announced an intention to terminate its merger agreement with Dell. However, on Saturday a Dell spokesman said Dell has the right to match HP's offer for three business days and is weighing its options.
Here are some details on 3Par: Q: What does 3Par do? A: 3Par makes and sells storage utilities, or groups of specialized computers designed to store data that are frequently updated. The company has technology for what's known as thin provisioning, the ability to dole out only as much storage space as necessary at any given moment, with the ability to quickly scale up or down depending on the conditions.

The Microsoft co-founder has filed suit against Google, Apple, Yahoo, Netflix, Facebook, and more, claiming that they are all violating patents owned by Allen’s defunct Interval Research.
If something is worth doing, it is worth doing right. Â Apparently that is a lesson that Paul Allen believes in. In what may be one of the more inclusive lawsuits of recent memory, Allen has decided to sue pretty much everybody. In the world. Or at least everybody on the Internet that is using what he sees as technology that was patented by his now-defunct company, Interval Research, and that is almost everyone.
The suit specifically stems from four patents that make up the building blocks of online commerce, and are seen in almost every form of news-based website. According to the lawsuit obtained by Wired, one of the patents deals with the technology that allows companies to include recommendations to customers based on what they are looking at. A second patent covers similar technology for news stories that recommends and links stories based on the one readers are currently reading.
