It is potentially embarrassing for Facebook because some blogs and websites have accused Places of being a rip off of existing location-based social networks such as Foursquare and Gowalla.
Google 's Chrome operating system will be available through Verizon Wireless in late November, according to an unnamed source cited by the blog Downloadsquad .
The blog's source specifically said that the tablet will appear on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. The blog said the tablet would probably be heavily subsidized by Verizon to compete against the Apple iPad .
The blog also speculated that the HTC tablet would have plenty of popular features, in keeping with HTC's Nexus One smartphone tradition. Those include a 1280-by-720 multitouch display for the tablet, 2GB of RAM, and a minimum of 32GB of storage, the blog said.
RIM, through a spokeswoman, said that Amazon.com has been selling the new smartphone for $99.99 since its launch on Aug. 12, following an "obviously ... common online pricing and promotional strategy that has been used with many other product introductions in the past." Carrier AT&T sells the new Torch for $199.99.
Amazon.com did not comment on its pricing practices, although several analysts said that pricing would likely have been a point negotiated between Amazon officials and RIM officials.
There are, indeed, many dramatic examples of smartphone discounts on various Web sites, including Amazon.com. For example, the Sony Ericsson Xperia x10 at AT&T is listed on Wirefly for $80, after AT&T had launched it Monday for $250.
